If you're visiting Terceira Island, one of the absolute must-do experiences is taking a dip in the Biscoitos Natural Pools. These aren't your average beaches, these pools were formed by solidified lava flows right on the coast, creating a network of sheltered swimming spots surrounded by dramatic black volcanic rock. The contrast of the deep blue Atlantic against the rugged lava formations makes this place look straight out of a postcard. What's So Special About It? Lava Rock Swimming Pools: The pools fill naturally with ocean water, offering a calm, clear, and refreshing swimming experience. Some areas are perfect for a relaxed float, while others are deep enough for a more adventurous swim. Wave Watching: Even if you're not swimming, it's mesmerizing to watch the powerful Atlantic waves crash against the volcanic rocks while the pools remain calm and inviting. Snorkeling: The crystal-clear water and sheltered pools make this a great spot for snorkeling, you might even spot small fish and marine life hiding in the lava crevices.

Tips for Visiting

  • Wear Water Shoes: The volcanic rocks can be sharp and uneven, so bring water shoes to make it easier to walk around and get in and out of the pools.

  • Check the Tide & Weather: On calm days, it's a relaxing swim, but when the tide is high and the ocean is rough, waves can spill into the pools, making conditions more unpredictable. If the sea looks wild, it's best to just enjoy the views from the rocks.

  • Come Early for Fewer Crowds: The pools are super popular in summer, so if you want a quieter experience, visit in the morning before the crowds roll in. Pack a Towel & Snacks: There are some picnic areas nearby, but not a ton of food options right at the pools, so it's a great spot for a DIY picnic after your swim.
