Hunts Creek Reserve, located in Carlingford, New South Wales, is a serene bushland area offering a variety of walking tracks and the picturesque Balaka Falls. The reserve provides a natural retreat amidst suburban surroundings, making it a popular spot for families, hikers, and nature enthusiasts. 

Key Features: Balaka Falls: This scenic waterfall is a central attraction within the reserve. The falls are most impressive after rainfall, offering a tranquil setting for visitors. Walking Tracks: The reserve boasts approximately 2.5 kilometers of maintained tracks, including the Balaka Falls Circuit, a 1.8-kilometer loop that provides views of the falls and traverses diverse forest areas. Flora and Fauna: Visitors can observe a variety of native plants and wildlife, with the area supporting species such as Blackbutt, Turpentine, Sydney Red Gum, and Red Bloodwood trees.

Tips for Visiting


  • Access Points: Multiple entrances are available, with the Ferndale Avenue entry providing a short 100-meter walk to the top of Balaka Falls. For a longer walk, the Norfolk Place entrance offers a 250-meter path leading to the falls. 

  • Trail Conditions: Some tracks include stairs and uneven surfaces; sturdy footwear is recommended. Be cautious after rain, as creek crossings may become impassable. 

  • Amenities: While the reserve offers natural beauty, facilities are limited. It's advisable to bring your own water and snacks. Dogs are permitted but must be kept on a leash at all times. 

  • Environmental Awareness: Some visitors have noted signs of pollution in the creek. Swimming is not recommended, and visitors are encouraged to respect the environment by disposing of waste properly.
