If you want a fun and unique experience in Kyoto, Iwatayama Monkey Park is the place to go. Located in Arashiyama, this park is home to over 100 wild Japanese macaques, also known as snow monkeys. But the best part? You get to interact with them in their natural habitat while enjoying one of the best panoramic views of Kyoto! It's a short but steep hike to the top, but once you reach the monkey area, you'll be rewarded with amazing city views and playful monkeys all around. Why Visit Iwatayama Monkey Park? Get Up Close with Wild Monkeys: Unlike zoos, the monkeys here roam freely, and you can even feed them from a special viewing hut! One of the Best Kyoto Views: From the top, you'll get a stunning view of Kyoto's skyline and mountains, especially beautiful at sunset. Feed the Monkeys (the Right Way!): You can buy special monkey food (apples, peanuts, etc.) and feed them from inside a caged hut, a fun and safe way to interact. A Short & Scenic Hike: The hike takes about 20-30 minutes, passing through peaceful forest trails with occasional monkey sightings along the way. Great Year-Round Visit: Whether you come during cherry blossom season, autumn, or winter, the views and experience are always incredible.

Tips for Visiting

  • Best Time to Go? Morning or late afternoon for cooler weather and fewer crowds. Avoid midday in summer, it gets hot!

  • How to Get There: The park entrance is in Arashiyama, about 5 minutes from the Togetsukyo Bridge.

  • Entry Fee: 600 yen per person (cash only).

  • Wear Comfortable Shoes: The hike is steep in some areas, so proper footwear is recommended.

  • Don't Touch or Stare at the Monkeys: These are wild animals, and staring directly at them can be seen as a challenge. Just relax and enjoy watching them!

  • Bring Water & Snacks: There are no vending machines or shops at the top, so stay hydrated.

  • Combine with Other Arashiyama Attractions: After the monkey park, explore the Bamboo Forest, Tenryu-ji Temple, and the riverside area!
