Ehukai Pillbox Hike
2.3 miles 734ft elevation Loop Trail Moderate
The Ehukai Pillbox Hike is a short but rewarding ridge trail on Oahu’s North Shore, offering stunning views of the Pacific Ocean, the Banzai Pipeline surf break, and surrounding lush landscapes. Along the way, you'll pass old World War II military pillboxes that have since been covered in colorful graffiti, making them popular photo spots. The trailhead is located behind Sunset Elementary School, near Ehukai Beach Park. The first part of the trail is shaded, passing through a tropical forest with tree roots and uneven terrain. Expect muddy patches if it has recently rained. Mid-Hike: As you gain elevation, the trail becomes steeper and more challenging. Some areas have ropes to help with footing on slippery sections. Stay on the main path to avoid side trails that can be confusing. The first pillbox offers a great view of the North Shore coastline and the famous Banzai Pipeline surf break. Continue another 5-10 minutes to the second pillbox, which has an even more panoramic view of the ocean and surrounding mountains. This is one of the best sunset spots on the North Shore.
Tips for the Hiking
Best Time: Early Morning or Late Afternoon
Sunrise: Cooler temperatures, fewer people, great lighting for photos.
Midday: Hot & exposed at the top—bring sunscreen!
Sunset: Beautiful colors over the ocean, but bring a headlamp for the descent.
Wear sturdy shoes: Roots & mud make it slippery after rain.
Bring water: No water sources on the trail.
Watch for mosquitos: Bug spray is recommended, especially for the shaded sections.
Use ropes if needed: Some steep sections have ropes to help with balance. Respect the pillboxes: They are WWII historical sites, not just photo spots.
Pack a headlamp: Essential if hiking at sunset for safe descent.
Thoughts from my Hike
The trailhead is in the Sunset Elementary School parking lot in Haleiwa. Some parking available in the school parking lot. The hike starts out through the woods, but you start to see views after you traverse a thigh-crunching hill. A very nice view when you get to the Pillbox. There is the main hike to the Pillbox, and then there is a loop hike connected to the trail which goes through the woods and passes a really interesting rock quarry where people have made a bunch of small rock totems. This loop is more for exercise, then anything else. After the fact, I realized there was a least one more bunker off the trail that I didn't visit, so if you go, be on the lookout for signs.
