Hanauma Bay Rim Hike

1 - 3 miles 500ft elevation Loop Trail Moderate

The Hanauma Bay Rim Hike is a lesser-known, unofficial ridge trail that offers breathtaking panoramic views of Hanauma Bay, Koko Crater, and the Pacific Ocean. This hike takes you above the bay, giving you incredible coastal scenery without the crowds. Important Note: This trail is not officially maintained, and some parts may be steep and eroded. The hike starts near the Hanauma Bay parking lot, just before the entrance gate to the preserve. Walk toward the right side of the parking lot, where a small, unmarked dirt path leads uphill. The trail quickly gains elevation, providing early views of the coastline. Mid-Hike: The path follows the ridgeline along the outer edge of Hanauma Bay. Expect some steep sections with loose gravel, hiking shoes with good grip are recommended. Along the ridge, you’ll see waves crashing into the rocky coastline below and a bird’s-eye view of the reef in Hanauma Bay. The highest point of the hike offers a sweeping view of Hanauma Bay, Koko Head Crater, and even Molokai on a clear day. Some hikers continue toward the back of Koko Crater, but the terrain becomes more rugged. Descent & Return Follow the same path back down, being careful on steep or loose sections. The entire hike takes 1 to 1.5 hours round trip.

Tips for Hiking

  • Best Time: Early Morning or Late Afternoon.

  • Sunrise: Best lighting, fewer people, cooler temps.

  • Midday: Hot & exposed.

  • Sunset: Gorgeous golden-hour lighting, but bring a headlamp for the descent.

  • Avoid hiking after rain – The trail gets slippery, and the ridge can be dangerous in high winds.

  • Wear sturdy shoes: Trail has loose gravel & uneven terrain.

  • Bring plenty of water: No shade or water sources on the trail.

  • Use sun protection: Hat, sunglasses, and sunscreen are a must.

  • Be mindful of wind: The ridge is exposed, so strong gusts can make hiking difficult.

  • Respect the area – Stay on established trails to prevent erosion.

Thoughts from my Hike

This hike gives you a wonderful birds-eye view of Hanauma Bay. I took a different route in the beginning. I parked in at the street right before the entrance road.  I walked up the highway for about 75 yards, to a little side road. The is a dirt path on the left that takes you up to the steep paved road up to the top, where you will take a side trail off to the left. From there you can follow along the ridge and then also go to the right and head uphill to the tower. I did not go that far as I was actually looking for the rock bridge. I actually missed it. You would go straight to the left towards the corner of the bay and scramble down the hill to see it. You can not see it from the top. I will return on another day and update this hike with the bridge. It is a hot hike as there is no shade, so bring plenty of water.
