Kahekili Ridge Pillbox Hike

2.9 miles 1791ft elevation Out & Back Moderate/Hard

The Kahekili Ridge Pillbox Hike is a hidden gem on Oahu’s west side, offering stunning coastal views, old military pillboxes, and a challenging ridgeline climb. This off-the-beaten-path hike is great for those looking for an adventurous ridge trek with fewer crowds than other pillbox hikes like Lanikai or Ehukai. This is not an official, maintained trail, so navigation can be tricky. The trailhead is unmarked and located near Kahekili Highway (Kamehameha Highway area) in Kaneohe. The first part of the trail ascends quickly through dense vegetation, requiring some scrambling. Expect loose dirt, steep climbs, and occasional rope sections. Mid-Hike: After the initial climb, the trail follows a narrow ridgeline with expansive views of Kaneohe Bay and the Ko’olau Mountains. Along the ridge, you’ll pass old military pillboxes, some covered in graffiti. The ridge is exposed, so expect strong winds at the top. The final pillbox offers a panoramic view of Kaneohe Bay, Mokoli’i (Chinaman’s Hat), and Coconut Island. On clear days, you can even see Moloka’i in the distance. Descent & Return: The way down can be tricky due to loose gravel, use caution and the ropes where available. Some hikers continue along the ridge to make a loop, while others return the way they came.

Tips for Hiking

  • Best Time: Morning or Late Afternoon.

  • Early Morning: Cooler temps, fewer people.

  • Midday: Very hot.

  • Late Afternoon: Stunning golden-hour lighting, but be sure to leave before dark.

  • Avoid hiking after heavy rain: The ridge becomes extremely slippery and dangerous.

  • Parking: Limited street parking near the trailhead. Be respectful of residents—do not block driveways or private property.

  • Trailhead Location: The trail entrance is not officially marked—most hikers use AllTrails or GPS navigation to locate the starting point.

  • Wear sturdy hiking boots – The trail is steep and loose.

  • Bring gloves: Useful for rope sections and steep climbs.

  • Carry at least 2 liters of water: No water sources along the trail.

  • Pack bug spray: Mosquitos are common in the shaded sections.

  • Use caution on the ridge: Strong winds and narrow sections require careful footing.

  • Download offline maps: Since the trail is unmarked, GPS navigation is recommended.

Thoughts from my Hike

Pretty enjoyable hike. The trail was marked good with no surprises. Only one fork to go left on. Not too hard on the legs, but there were a few tougher inclines to deal with. There were ropes at some of the tough spots. I would definitely recommend shoe spikes if you have them or very good hiking shoes. Gloves help out a lot also when going up the ropes. It ends at a nice size pillbox with very nice views down to the ocean and the bay to the left.
