Kuli'ou'ou Ridge Trail
4.7 miles 1650ft elevation Out & Back Trail Moderate
The Kuliʻouʻou Ridge Trail is one of Oahu’s best ridge hikes, offering stunning panoramic views of the Windward Coast, Waimanalo, Koko Head, and even Diamond Head. This moderate-to-strenuous hike is a favorite among locals because of its gradual incline, beautiful ridge walk, and breathtaking summit views. Some steep sections near the summit, but ropes and steps make it manageable. Can get muddy and slippery after rain, wear good hiking shoes. The trailhead starts at the end of Kuliʻouʻou Road in Hawaiʻi Kai. The first section follows a wide dirt path through a shaded ironwood forest. Expect a steady but manageable incline as you gain elevation. Mid-Hike: After about a mile, the trail narrows and begins a series of switchbacks, making the ascent easier. The forest becomes thinner, revealing increasingly impressive views of the coastline. You’ll pass through a grove of Cook pine trees, providing a unique change in scenery. As you approach the top, the trail becomes steeper, with stairs built into the ridge to help with the climb. The final ridge section is more exposed, offering epic views in every direction. From the summit, enjoy sweeping views of Waimanalo, Koko Crater, Diamond Head, and even Molokaʻi on a clear day. There’s a small bench at the top, perfect for a break and taking in the scenery. Descent & Return: The way down is steep in sections, but the stairs and switchbacks make it easier. Be cautious of loose dirt and rocks, especially after rain. The total hike takes about 3.5 to 4.5 hours round trip.
Tips for Hiking
Best Time: Morning or Late Afternoon.
Early Morning: Cooler temps, fewer hikers.
Midday: Hot & exposed at the top.
Late Afternoon: Golden-hour lighting, but ensure you descend before dark.
Avoid hiking after heavy rain: The ridge gets slippery, and cloud cover can block summit views.
Parking: Limited street parking near the trailhead on Kuliʻouʻou Road. Be respectful of residents—do not block driveways or mailboxes.
Wear sturdy hiking boots: Some rocky and root-covered sections.
Bring at least 2 liters of water: No water sources along the trail.
Use sun protection: Sunscreen, hat, and sunglasses are a must.
Pack a snack: The summit is a great place to rest and eat.
Consider trekking poles: Helpful for steep descents.
