Makaua Falls Hike
1.3 miles 944ft elevation Out & Back Trail Hard
The Makaua Falls Hike is a hidden waterfall hike on Oahu’s windward side, featuring a lush jungle trek through a steep valley leading to a stunning multi-tiered waterfall. This hike is off-the-beaten-path, making it a great option for those looking for a secluded, adventurous experience. Important Not an official trail. Expect muddy, overgrown terrain and stream crossings. The trailhead is located in the Makaua Village area, near Kaʻaʻawa. The hike begins on an unmarked path, quickly leading into a lush, narrow valley. Expect dense vegetation, tall trees, and a well-worn but unmaintained path. Mid-Hike: The trail follows a stream, requiring multiple crossings, your feet will get wet. The path can be slippery and overgrown, making navigation challenging in some areas. Look for bamboo groves and large boulders along the way. The waterfall is multi-tiered, with a large vertical drop surrounded by mossy rock walls. Depending on rainfall, the flow may be a strong cascade or a light trickle. The pool at the base is shallow but a great spot to cool off. Descent & Return: Follow the same stream route back to the trailhead. The full hike takes about 2 to 3 hours round trip, depending on water levels and conditions.
Tips for Hiking

Thoughts from my Hike
Makaua Falls is usually only visible after heavy rains, It is a tall waterfall located on the eastern shore of Oahu, near the town of Kaaawa. It's a short trek into the valley, but it has plenty of fun and challenging obstacles. You will hop rocks, slip through mud, and even climb a small waterfall. I had to park down the street at the beach park as there was no parking close to the trailhead.
