Mo'ole Falls Hike
3.0 miles 1076ft elevation Out & Back Trail Moderate
The Mo'ole Falls Hike is a hidden, off-the-beaten-path waterfall adventure deep in Moanalua Valley. This challenging jungle trek features multiple waterfalls, stream crossings, and lush rainforest scenery, making it perfect for experienced hikers seeking a secluded and rewarding experience. The hike begins at Moanalua Valley Park, following the same main valley road as the Moanalua Middle Ridge Trail. The first 2 miles are easy, with a wide dirt path and gentle elevation gain. Mid-Hike: After about 2 miles, look for a turnoff leading into the stream, this marks the start of the waterfall route. The path is unmarked and involves rock hopping, stream crossings, and navigating dense jungle. Mo'ole Falls has multiple tiers, the lower falls are easier to access, while the upper sections require climbing and rope-assisted scrambling. The main waterfall cascades over mossy rocks, creating a peaceful and secluded jungle scene. The flow varies, stronger after rain but can be a light trickle in drier months. Swimming is possible, but the pool is shallow and rocky. Descent & Return: Follow the same stream route back to rejoin the main Moanalua Valley Trail. The full hike takes about 4-6 hours round trip, depending on water levels and conditions.
Tips for Hiking
Best Time: After light rain, but not heavy storms.
Early Morning: Cooler temps, fewer people.
Midday: Best lighting for photos, but hotter.
Late Afternoon: Peaceful, but avoid getting caught near the stream in the dark.
Do NOT hike after heavy rain: The stream can flood quickly, making crossings dangerous.
Parking: Park at Moanalua Valley Neighborhood Park (limited spots, arrive early). Do not park in residential driveways or private property.
Wear waterproof hiking shoes: Slippery stream crossings & muddy terrain.
Bring bug spray: Mosquitos are heavy in the jungle.
Use GPS or offline maps: No official trail markers so easy to get lost.
Pack extra socks & towels: Your feet will get wet.
Check weather before going: Flash floods can make this hike dangerous.
Thoughts from my Hike
Well, thankfully I had a fully charged phone and google maps!! The Mo 'Ole Falls Trail was overgrown and terribly marked. The trail was hard to follow in a lot of places. Just kept looking for the obvious trampled path. I finally made it to the first waterfall and it was not very exciting, due to the lack of rain recently. I was not sure of where the trail went from there, to the second waterfall higher up, so I decided not to chance it. I got off the trail somehow on the way back and was definitely lost. Luckily I remembered the name of the street my truck was parked on, so I used google maps in the walking mode, to trudge through the trees until I could hear the highway nearby. Made it through all the brush and fallen tree limbs until I came upon a chain link fence along the road. Scaled it, lost one of my shoe spikes in the process and ended up along the highway about a 15 minute walk below where I parked. Shirt muddy and ripped, and thoroughly frustrated LOL Anyway, it was an adventure for the books. Tip: Always make sure your phone is fully charged and you have one of those external battery units. You never know when it you might need it!!!
